Tara Golf Trophies
1. TARA PERPETUAL TROPHY
This trophy was first played for in 1963 and was won by Ed Cooney in Tara's first Tournament of that year. The Trophy was presented by the founding member of Tara, Cathal McAlester, who passed away in April 1976.
It was Mike Cooney, the first President of Tara, who suggested at the first executive meeting in February 1961 that a suitable Trophy be struck which would be played for at the opening tournament each year of the Tara circuit.
2. MAY MCALPINE SHIELD
This shield was donated to Tara by Bill McAlpine in memory of his sister May who held the post as president of Tara in 1988 and 1989. May had been a loyal member of Tara almost from its inception in 1961 and she was a perennial member of the Tara Executive holding down almost every role until she passed away in 1990. All the senior members of our association dearly remember May and we are pleased to have a trophy in her name.
3 THE CATHAL McALESTER MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy was presented to Tara by Brian Halpenny, Golf Pro at Craigwood Golf Course, in recognition of his dear friend Cathal who was responsible for getting Tara to play at Craigwood always in July. In golfing circles both had been members of Dundalk Golf Club in Ireland before coming to North America. This trophy is truly commemorative of the man whose idea it was to set up this golfing association, Tara. Although our venues for this trophy may now change from year-to-year, the trophy remains a reminder of the bonds Tara Golf has forged over the years.
The John O’Shea memorial plaque…played for on the Sunday following the tournament for the Cathal McAlester Memorial Trophy).
To the best ball foursome at Lake Placid (This trophy is no longer limited to the Lake Placid golf weekend and is now presented at other venues as well. It has been awarded lately during our St-Jean de Matha weekend.).
John was a long time member of Tara.
4. THE D'ARCY MCGEE TROPHY
It was Cathal McAlester who suggested that since Tara was essentially an Irish-Canadian Golfing Association, it seemed appropriate to have a trophy in honour of a great Irish Canadian patriot and who better than D'Arcy McGee, a man who championed the cause of Irish independence from Great Britain and who was exiled for his efforts, only later to end up championing the cause of Canadian Confederation and representing Montreal as Minister of Agriculture in John A. MacDonald's first government in 1867.
5. THE GERRY FARRELL MEMORIAL SHIELD
The Tara Executive voted unanimously to draft a very appropriate shield featuring the Farrell Family Crest in memory of the late Gerry Farrell who served as president of Tara in 1986 and 1987. Gerry was a very loyal Tara member and served on the executive for many years. Since 1989, we strive each year to have a member of Gerry's family present the trophy.
6. PRESIDENT'S TROPHY
AER LINGUS TEAM TROPHY
Irish teams compete with Tara for this trophy at our last tournament of the season.
